All life on earth is dependent on plants.
Plants’ healing power…
The use of herbs is perhaps the oldest healing system in existence (dating back to 6,000 BC), many types of plants and herbs have been used for thousands of years with safety and efficiency. A certain group of plants provide medicinal properties which help us improving mental and physical well-being and bringing balance to life. The flavonoids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals found in herbs and plants can help the body’s immune system combat some of the diseases commonly afflicting dogs.
These medicinal plants have had their uses throughout time in all cultures.
Early civilizations knew about aromatic plants, and how to benefit from their vital energy, intelligence and healing potential.
Many, but not all, of these plants, produce essential oils and the art and science of aromatherapy involves the use of the essential oils that these medicinal plants produce.
Essential oils are volatile, fragrant, oily substances derived from certain plants through several different processes.
Essential oils have many active ingredients and the number of chemical ingredients in an essential oil varies enormously.
Because of the volatile nature of the oils, their molecules evaporate into the air as soon as the lid comes off the bottle; when both animals and humans smell them we absorb their chemical constituents into the brain via the olfactory system.
When inhaled, essential oils reach the blood system via the mucous membranes of the nose. The sense of smell is connected to the limbic system of the brain where emotions, memory and certain regulatory functions of the body are found. When the oils are inhaled, they trigger neurotransmitters, which send messages out to the affected area to reduce pain, sedate, stimulate, calm or whatever is required.
Common actions of essential oils include:
♡ Anti-bacterial
♡ Anti-viral
♡ Anti-fungal
♡ Anti-inflammatory
♡ Sedative
♡ Fleas and ticks repellent
♡ Build the immune system
♡ Help with respiratory issues
♡ Boost organs function
♡ Heal skin issues
♡ Improve allergies
…But there are many more actions!
It is widely accepted these days that the sense of smell also affects our emotional state, which, in turn, influences our physical state. Essential oils work simultaneously on the emotional and physical level. Essential oils are truly ideal partners in a natural approach to animal care.
